Note: There is a slight difference with MS Word on Mac as the Cite-O-Matic will appear as its own toolbar.
Note - this does not work in the newest version, Mendeley Reference. It only works in Mendeley Desktop. If you would like to use this feature, you can download Mendeley Desktop. You can have both Reference and Desktop installed on your computer and sync with your online account.
If you want to create a bibliography, without having a document that has in-text citations, you can do so directly from Mendeley Desktop.
Select all the records you wish to add to your list, from your Mendeley Library, and then go to Edit and click on Copy. Once you have done this you can go to a text document, like Word, and simply click Paste. This will create a bibliography in your chosen citation style.
Start editing your own citation styles with the open source Citation Style Editor. To get started we recommend this tutorial.
Once you've installed Mendeley Cite the add-in can be accessed via the 'References' tab on the Ribbon in Word.
Selecting 'Mendeley Cite' in the 'References' tab will initiate Mendeley Cite in an add-in window found in the right hand side panel, where you'll be shown the sign in page.
Select a citation style by clicking on 'Citation Settings' in the right-hand side panel
Position the cursor where you want to insert a citation in your document. Now go to the Mendeley Cite add-in window.
On the 'References' tab in Mendeley Cite select the check box of the reference(s) you wish to insert.
Select ‘Insert citation’ to insert the reference into your document. If you wish to insert multiple references, simply select more tick boxes. The citation will automatically update with the correct formatting.
