Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary loan (ILL) is a cooperative resource sharing service that allows our community to borrow items that we do not own or subscribe to from another library. ILL is a free service for students and employees at the Frist College of Medicine.

Before requesting resources, you must register for an ILLiad account. Please follow the steps below.

  1. Go to the registration page.
  2. Review the guidelines, especially regarding "About your Username and Password" and "Important Copyright Information."
  3. Scroll down to "First Time Users Click Here," and click on the link. Doing so acknowledges your agreement with the terms of service provided.
  4. Fill out the required fields and submit your responses with the "Submit Information" button at the bottom.

To request items, you may log in to your ILLiad account and use the "New Request" menu links on the left side of the page. This allows you to enter item information for specific types of resources, such as articles, books, book chapters, theses, etc. Please provide as much information as possible, as this allows us to process your request more efficiently.

If you are using OneSearch and find a resource that we do not have access to, there will often be a link to InterLibrary Loan at the bottom of the record. Accessing ILLiad this way will populate much of the needed information for your request.

Our turnaround time varies based on many factors. Please allow up to 1 week for the delivery of articles and 2 weeks for the delivery of books.

Articles will be sent electronically, either directly to your email (check Junk or Clutter) or will be made available in your ILLiad account inbox.

Physical requests (books) can be picked up at the Information Desk on the 1st floor of Bunch Library. Physical items should be returned to Bunch Library at one of the below locations:

  • Bunch Library Information Desk
  • Outside book return (across the street from the entrance to Bunch)
  • Bunch Library Book Return in the library foyer.

Who can use ILL?

Currently enrolled Belmont students and employees. Alumni will need to use their employer's ILL service, or their local public library.

What is the cost for this service?

There is no cost to you for ILL.

What can I request?

Books, articles, DVDs, sound recordings, music scores, theses/dissertations

What items CAN'T be borrowed through ILL?

The following items are unlikely to be obtained via ILL: textbooks, ebooks, newly published books, entire issues of journals, genealogical materials, books 100+ years old, LPs

How long does ILL take?

Typically, allow 1 week for articles and 2 weeks for books. But you may get your items sooner!

Where do I pick up ILL items?

Articles will be sent electronically, either directly to your email (check Junk or Clutter) or will be made available in your ILLiad account inbox.

Physical requests (books) can be picked up at the Information Desk on the 1st floor of Bunch Library. You can also return your items to the Information Desk, the outside book return (across the street from the entrance to Bunch), or the Book Return in the library foyer.

When do I need to return an item?

That depends. The due date for physical items will be on the sticker placed on the item. This is often a month or less. For articles, please refer to any information about copyright access provided when you received the article.

Can I renew my ILL item?

Sometimes this is an option for physical ILL items. Before the due date, log in to your account and renew the item.

Medical librarians can assist with the process for requesting ILL items, but we are unable to check the status of a submitted request, renew ILL items, etc.

Need a resource faster?

ILL is a great resource to obtain known items that Belmont does not have access to. If you are on a tight deadline, submit your ILL request first but also consider booking an appointment with a librarian. We can help you find resources that we do have. Use the link below to book an appointment now.
