Copyright and Fair Use

Guidelines on copyright and fair use for instructors, researchers, and students

Using Medical Library Electronic Resources

The Medical Library has licensed electronic resources to support student learning, study and research. These resources are covered by copyright and their use is guided by license agreements or contracts signed by the Medical Library. These contracts define "authorized users" as current Belmont students, faculty and staff. Some are restricted further to FCoM users only. As "authorized users" students have a responsibility to uphold these license agreements and follow the following best practices:

  • Students may download a book chapter, journal article, image or figure for their personal use.
  • Students should not download entire books or issues of journals.
  • Students should provide links to materials rather than files when sharing with others within the Belmont or FCoM community.
  • Students should not share materials outside of the Belmont community.
  • Students should not share their login credentials for Belmont resources with anyone.

Using Instructor Created Materials

Materials created by Belmont instructors are copyright protected and include course syllabi, slide decks, video and audio recordings, handouts, lecture notes, quizzes and exams, cases, and assignments. Students should follow these best practices in order to respect the intellectual property rights of instructors:

  • Download and save materials for their own personal use
  • Do not share outside of the Belmont community
  • Do not pass down to Belmont students in a different cohort
  • Do not capture or reproduce and exam or quiz questions, for personal use or sharing with others
  • Request permission to use materials for a presentation or publication
